What Is Sensory Processing in Children? What Parents Need to Know

Sensory processing is one of those terms
that appears frequently in conversations
about child development and behavior —
and is rarely explained clearly enough
to be genuinely useful to parents.
Understanding how children process
sensory information — and what happens
when that processing is different from
typical — is one of the most practical
things a parent can know.

more or less sensitive than average —

visible or understood by the
adults around them.

What Sensory Processing Differences
Look Like

differences identifies two broad
patterns — though individual
children often show a combination
of both across different sensory systems:

Sensory over-responsivity —
the child’s nervous system
responds to sensory input
more intensely than typical.
What feels mildly uncomfortable
to most people may feel genuinely
painful or overwhelming to
a sensory over-responsive child.

Signs of sensory over-responsivity:
Strong negative reactions to
clothing textures — seams,
labels, certain fabrics.
Distress at loud sounds that
others find tolerable —
hand dryers, crowds, music.
Extreme reactions to certain
food textures, tastes, or smells.
Discomfort with light touch —
preferring firm pressure to gentle touch.
Avoidance of messy play —

Sensory under-responsivity —

These children may seem to

Signs of sensory under-responsivity:
Seeming not to notice pain,
heat, or cold that would
affect most children.
Constantly seeking intense
physical input — crashing,
jumping, bumping into things.
Difficulty noticing when
hands or face are dirty.
Seeking very spicy, sour,
or intense flavors.
Needing to touch everything.
High pain tolerance.

Sensory seeking — closely
related to under-responsivity,
sensory seeking describes children
who actively and intensely
pursue sensory experiences —
movement, touch, sound, taste —
in ways that can appear as
hyperactivity, impulsivity,
or behavioral difficulty.

The Relationship Between Sensory
Processing and Other Conditions

Research on sensory processing
differences finds they are
significantly more common in
children with certain developmental
conditions:

Autism spectrum conditions —
research finds that sensory
processing differences are
present in the majority of
autistic children and are
now included in the diagnostic
criteria for autism spectrum disorder.

ADHD — research finds significant
overlap between sensory processing
differences and ADHD, with
many children showing features of both.

Anxiety — research finds

note three things:

After one week, look for
